Cotehele (National Trust), pictured above displaying its traditional Christmas garland, has beautiful gardens sloping down to the River Tamar, an historic quay and mill and is well worth a visit. Buckland Abbey (National Trust) is a short drive from Monkstone down the Tavy valley. The Abbey dates back to the 13th Century and was built by Cistercian monks. During the Elizabethan era, it was the home of Francis Drake. A Rembrandt painting has been recently discovered at Buckland Abbey. There are a number of lovely walks through the estate including three dog friendly trails. The Garden House, considered to be one of the finest gardens in Britain, is not far from Buckland Abbey.
